Saint Paul, located along the banks of the Mississippi River, is the capital of Minnesota, although it is the smaller of its Twin City, Minneapolis. Together the two form one large metropolitan area with about 3.5 million residents. St. Paul has a colorful history, and is home to more than 100 landmarks listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Cathedral of Saint Paul, modeled after St. Peter's Basilica at the Vatican in Rome, is one of the most elaborate in the country. During the Prohibition-era, the city was known as a haven for notorious gangsters like John Dillinger and Babyface Nelson, and tours are offered of their famous hangouts.  Saint Paul is a college town as it is home to several colleges and universities which include Saint Catherine University, and Concordia University. It also boasts the Minnesota Museum of American Art, a science museum, and Como Park, which is a beautiful and popular park known for its picnic areas, zoo and conservatory. The city hosts several festivals throughout the year, and the Minnesota State Fair is held here each summer. 

The city of Saint Paul makes the most of winter weather and offers outdoor skating in the downtown. But one of the most popular events is the Winter Carnival which draws over 350,000 hearty souls during a 10-day festival that includes music, ice and snow carving, and parades.
